Yes, to see an elegant trogon you're probably going to have to make a trip over here to southeast Arizona ... May or June next year is the best time to hear the males calling out for potential mates.
I'm sure you have plenty of birds there in LA that we can't see here, especially now at the beach.
When we went to San Diego last year, we were surprised to see wild parrots near our Airbnb close to sunset cliffs.
It never ceases to amaze me what a difference in birds you get just a state or 2 over. (Though, I suppose if everything were so close, I'd be popping over to AZ often.) I'm so glad you got to see the wild parrots on your trip! They are a wonderful, and loud, birding must in the SoCal region. Hopefully you saw them in a really cool light, where they look almost neon. You will definitely see them in LA, too!
Phenomenal photographs! Elegant Trogon is on my birding life list. Seeing one here seems like a fairy tale all around!

Unfortunately it was one of those foggy San Diego summer mornings. But still a pretty cool experience. We'll definitely be back that way real soon.
